Infographics

The idea of having people present information in a visual format is not new: the people of ancient France used cave paintings in the caves of Lascaux to show hunting patterns and the Egyptians used hieroglyphics to communicate; however, the use of infographics in learning strategies can also be used in teaching. Using infographics is one way of presenting complex information in a way that supports higher order level thinking. Since learning activities are designed to give students guidance on information they have mastered and areas where they may need development, an assignment to create an infographic can offer students a unique way of showcasing their knowledge and a way for educators to assess both content learning and skills necessary for 21st century learning.
Benefits of having students create infographics:
- Activates critical thinking skills
- Engages creativity
- promotes long-term retention of information
- Gives practice with writing skills
- Gives practice in summarization
- Provides integration and synthesis of new knowledge and vocabulary
